WATER LEVEL UPDATE:
From Minister John Streiker:
"Wanted to update you on water levels. Lake levels stopped rising from the big rains, but with the warm weather they are likely to rise again. Last week Yukon Energy discussed the situation with the Water Resources Branch and took the decision to drop Schwatka Lake in order to increase the rate of drainage from the Southern Lakes.
Based on the forecast, Community Services are prepping in case sand and sandbags may be needed. There was a request from some residents for sand in Tagish / California Beach, so some sand and sandbags were provided at the Tagish Cemetery.
From Water Resources Branch:
"The Southern Lakes rose approximately 50 cm between July 21 and August 1 following a period of warm weather and a large rain event on July 23 and 24. Bennett, Tagish, Atlin and Marsh lakes have now stabilized following last week's relatively cool and dry weather.
"A ridge of high pressure over the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to bring well above-average temperatures and minimal rain to the Southern Lakes region this week. Temperatures will steadily climb over the next few days, peaking Wednesday and decreasing by the weekend. The long-range forecast suggests water levels could rise approximately 17 cm over the next two weeks due to increased glacial melt contributions, with high uncertainty. The peak water level ultimately depends on temperature and precipitation over the coming weeks."
From Marsh Lake Community Center:
We have lots of sandbags available in the gazebo. Please let us or Minister Streicker know if we need more sand. There are apparatuses to help fill the bags as well.
